Great Stuff!
May 14th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
I’ve had nothing but problems since it updated, AAAArgh why fix something that aint broke in the first place.
May 14th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
DAnny, I agree with you one hundred percent. V2 easily used and navigated around. V3 take valium until the pain goes away.
May 15th, 2009 at 8:10 am
Give it a chance! It’s new and innovative. I like it.
May 15th, 2009 at 11:35 am
I’m fairly new to gameshadow (I only had v2 for a couple of weeks) but I’m really liking v3! Great stuff! I’ve just set up a 2nd computer and started a remote download - not had a single problem yet =D
May 15th, 2009 at 11:44 am
Nice to see something creative. v3 looks and feels better.
May 15th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
JC1,
I agree give it a chance.
Chance 1
Have downloaded 7 updates for my games. What do ya know its still telling me to update 7 of my games. Yes I did refresh.
JC1 please advise me on how many chances I am to give.
May 15th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
I’m in two minds about this. Any improvements are welcome, but why fix something that ain’t broke ? I had just got used to the previous version and it was scanning and patching games very well. I could trust it to do that and there was even a flickering consideration of subscribing when I can afford it. But now ? There seem to bigs and usage issues. It says I have 12 critical updates but only one shows. Also my old login dod not work. I had to re-register. I’m logged in but “Home” goes to an anonymous page.
I want the old version back !

@Danny, @Smeagol & @Barney.
Sorry to hear you’re having problems with v3. Get in touch with us at the support email address and we’ll try and sort things out for you.
May 16th, 2009 at 6:25 am
Brand new versions of anything often begin as a buggy mess. GameShadow v3 is, for me, no exception. Where do I begin to list the problems?
When right-clicking the system tray icon, it takes 5 or 6 whole seconds for anything to appear … a near-eternity by usual standards! Then, once it does show up, clicking the “Check For Game Updates” link invariably causes an error message wherein a bunch of gibberish is displayed.
The main browser page that shows my games has no visible means for checking on updates. This can only be done through the system tray icon, which as was just said, doesn’t work.
I’m all for making progress. Yet sometimes “less” is better than “more” … such as the case of v2.5 versus this v3 fiasco. Even v2.5 had its share of problems with Vista compatibility. I wouldn’t be surprised if this v3 mess is even more Vista-unfriendly!
May 16th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Have sent the following to Gameshadow support . Will post again after resolution. One way or another.
Where do I start…… Lets start with 1) not being to log on with my old profile and having to create a new i.d. 2) Not being able to get to my profile page, because I need to log on first, but gameshadow is telling me that I am logged on. 3) Update of my games is not regestering on the ‘my games’ page. ie after downloading patch. menu still teling me game is out of date. 4) New games not being registered on GS. That is just the problems I have found to start with.
May 16th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
Well, thank goodness I patched up all my games before this xbox friendly (i.e. console favored dumbed down) kiddie web based version was released. control panel->uninstall. Goodbye xbox shadow. Thanks for the last few years of a great product. all good things come to an end I guess.
May 16th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
it dont even work …lol… load of rubbish why change some thing when its not broken..dont work with firefox ..dont work with ie7. ie8.dont list games dont patch games ..its a joke bring back old one that worked ..please
May 17th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
Where’s the web site gone
May 17th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
V3 is not working at all. The icon comes up in the systrey and down load starts but i keep getting a runtime error. I than try to go to the gameshadow website and the page can not be displayed. I turned my AVP program off and and enabled all cookies. Still no luck. I must say I admit the original version was the quickest way to update and navigate for demos. There still isn’t a fix for legally downloaded games such as SHIII, it still says unsupported version. Also I’ve emailed gameshadow in the past about these problems and I may have recieved one reply.
May 18th, 2009 at 8:08 am
Anyone know what’s happened to GameShadow? I haven’t been able to access the website since last Wednesday. I would email support but I can’t even find out the address if the website is down!!
May 18th, 2009 at 8:59 am
rka126 -
To answer your question …
Yeah, I’ll tell ya exactly what has happened.
In their mad rush to get an unwanted, unnecessary, pretty-boy version of GameShadow online, they jammed a product down our throats with more bugs on hand than any twelve low-rent hotels situated south of the downtown region. Since that time, they’ve been flooded with a zillion problem reports from outraged subscribers throughout cyberspace … question their alleged sanity about this useless, broken down pile o’ junk website … while no doubt casting aspersions on their collective parental heritage, as well.
WE WANT THE LAST VERSION BACK, DAMNIT!! This one requires another six months of testing and debugging!!!
May 18th, 2009 at 9:17 am
Oi, Daniel, now hang on a minute. Stop this nonsense. We’ve take a long time to try and find a balance and introduce some new stuff. We are working hard at trying to fix them. It’s all very well people shouting about something that changes whilst not paying anything for it. So, use your voice of choice and just don’t use it. We will fix it as soon as we can but it’s not constructive posting this sort of crap. It doesn’t help the development team iron out problems, which they are doing, with the help of constructive feedback from users.

Hi team at Gameshadow. I know you are having issues with the v3 but can you do one thing, please email all to advise them of a potential issue with the new version. This was the only page I could get to to fing that there was a problem. It may ease the pressure and annoyance that some are feeling, especially those who have yet to find out. Hope all works out in the end okay and keep on providing an excellent service.
May 18th, 2009 at 9:32 am
@ daniel
I agree with Tony - I haven’t seen any problems with it, yes it’s a different interface and that will take time to get used to but it still works and it opens up a bucketload of future possibilities (I’m loving the remote downloads! Use that work bandwidth rather than my home one!) - admittedly, i’m not an xbox gamer and i only play games on one PC (but i don’t think this is a new feature, it’s just been brought to the fore) so some of the features aren’t so much use to me - but as Tony says, it’s a free product at the end of the day (actually I liked it so much I’ve been a proper paid up sub for the last 3 years) - everyone bitched when Steam came out but I’ll bet the majority of people love it now…
It’s all in the name of progress and I say well done GameShadow for having the balls to try and create something new and innovative!

Hi guys, We’ve decided to use the blog here as a changelog so that you can see we are sorting things out. We’ve just fixed the looping login issue and this should now be working. We are working on the others now.
On the issue of UI and how we changed things. We are not going back, we believe this is the correct way forward and tbh most people are really liking it. However we DO want to hear from you, constructively of course. Feel free to email me personally at tony (at) gameshadow.com.
We’ll post more news here as we fix things.
May 18th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Hi all, we’ve just posted another build which fixes a bug on the advanced search form. Please feel free to download this new build. We’ll keep you posted with the other progress.
Regards,
Tony
May 18th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
Hi all,
We’ve also fixed the login bug which was affecting a small proportion of users over the weekend. Anyone who had problems logging in should try again and you should be back to normal.
If you created a new account to work around the bug then you can either continue using that, or if you want to switch back simply remove any computers from the Computers & Platforms tab in Settings, log out, and then log back in with your old details.
If you have any problems with this or anything else just contact us at the usual support email address.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
The GameShadow team
May 18th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
We have created a new build that will fix many of the disconnect issues (-214 and server disconnects). Please download the latest build from http://www.gameshadow.com/step1-download.php
Please post here or on the forums if you continue to have problems and if it’s worked too!
Regards,
Tony

Works PK So Far
1 Question
Is there a way to refesh a single game once it has been patched
it was a simple matter in the previous version but it eludes me here
Thanks for any help given
May 18th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
Hi Gordon, well not sure there is, although the “Check for game updates” is much faster now and does the same thing.
Cheers

tony spoken like true idiot, if i type in gameshadow.com and it says no website, and i type in yahoo.com and it comes up what do you think that means.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
sorry tony i take that back thought you were some kid doing the normal on forums, the site always worked before but now i get error, sometimes it does work in past but at moment its failing for me, im using ie8 but to be safe i did try opera to and it failed on that.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

May 18th, 2009 at 11:33 pm

May 18th, 2009 at 11:56 pm
nice one issue from earlier version seems gone and it downloaded a patch for one game really quick, and seems to be behaving like you intended it to. well done on fixing it quick.
May 19th, 2009 at 2:09 am
Is this new V.3 able to work with IE-8 and Win-7 ?
Other then the manual starting of GS V.3 it works very well and to new interface is nicely put together, downloads also don’t work with Win-7, that interface does at times come up but can not connect, it could be on my end because of the internet settings I have in place being a bit strict. I’ll look into that and see what I can come up with.
If not then I understand why I have to manually bring up the site and log in and not use the launch icon. The sys-tray icon does not work for me.
is there a way to link the sys-tray icon to IE-8 ? or is it simply a Windows 7
problem? So far Win-7 has worked for everything else I have but sence it hasn’t been released other then an RC it would stand to reason GS V.3 would have it’s share of difficulty
Anyway Nice work on the new look
May 19th, 2009 at 2:37 am
This is the error I get when useing the: (Search for game updates)

May 19th, 2009 at 10:00 am
Thans Mark, we’ll take a look and get back to you if we need more information.
May 19th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
Hi Tony
Can now get to website but am stuck in the verification/login loop with my old login10 minutes before this email. However created a new login and it is working fine. One thing I did note was that despite me not being able to login and see my information it was still downloading uodates in the background and installing, wierd.
May 19th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
We are fixing this bug right now! Won’t be long I hope.

May 19th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Guys, we’ve just fixed the login looping and verification bug. Please try again. Please post here or in the forums with results!
May 19th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Updated to the newest but now get a runtime error 440 at windows startup,
system tray icon disapears. I can start IE8, go to the site and login but trying to manually download a patch gets the same error. I’m going to try disableing everything on my end and try a bit of elimination and see if it’s something on my end causing it not to work for me.
May 19th, 2009 at 6:24 pm
Try uninstalling and nuking the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\GameShadow key. Delete everything in C:\Program Files\GameShadow and Documents\Users\All Users\Documents\GameShadow. Or if you have Vista it’s in the Users\Public area.
Then grab the latest build and set it up again see if it works. If not. Contact me personally at tony (at) gameshadow.com (say it’s Mogie from the blogie) and we can take a look.
Regards,
Tony

HA HA Thanks for the memory jog Tony, Registry keys are usually the first thing I try when something like this happens and I had totally forgotten about that.

Life is good once more lol
And thank you for the excellent support you give here on GS, One of the few places on the web a person can actually count on
Everything works just fine now.
BTW, Don’t pay much attention to the trolls, there in every forum, blog, mmorpg on the planet, there lives aren’t complete if they can’t stir up trouble.
Thanks Again. Mogie
May 19th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
Great, the registry did the trick? We better look and see if we can tweak anything in the installer. Stay in touch…let me know if anything else pings out of shape.

Downloaded and installed V3.0. When I try to run it, I get a brief error message that only displays for a fraction of a second before it disappears and GameShadow fails to load. The error message reads as follows;
Run-time error ‘5′:
<stack direction=”prepended”><thread object=”GameShadow” class=”basGeneral” method=”Main”/><thread object=”GameShadow” class=”basMenu” method=”GameShadowValid”/><thread object=”GameShadowAPI” class=”GameShadow” method=”Update”></stack><![CDATA[Invalid procedure call or argument]]>
Any suggestions?

I understand your point of view, but try to comprehend ours. In an effort towards that goal, let’s liken this situation to a newly acquired videogame.
You’ve got a title that works just fine. Been playing the thing for many months. Then, one day, the developer releases yet another patch … and the whole thing has so many problems, the game is rendered totally useless.
Which would be your most likely reaction?
1) “Hey, that’s interesting … my game doesn’t work now! Well, I’m sure the developer had good intentions. I’m gonna send ‘em a word of encouragement, letting ‘em know I appreciate the effort!”
or
2} “Ah, crap! Those %$&@& morons ruined everything! Pain-in-the-butt developers, always tryin’ to fix %$#& that ain’t %$#@% broken!”
As both gamers and flawed human beings, I think most people would react in the #2 fashion. We want a game that works, period … not a bunch of explanations.
Anyway, it is what it is. Best wishes to you and the crew. You guys have your work cut out for ya with this one!
May 21st, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Hey gameshadow where have you gone? I can not even get your website to load. The newest version of gameshadow is not working. Did you guys opull the plug or what?????
May 21st, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Hi Keith, how can you post on this blog if the website is down?
Please email me at tony (at) gameshadow.com and we’ll take a look. Or post on the technical support forum..oops you can’t do that can you?
May 21st, 2009 at 4:36 pm

We’ve just put a new build up. Fixes a startup crash issue for XP and Vista. Also tweaks a number of other things in the client. We are working on the alert bug where you are told you have new items…Mark will update us later!
May 22nd, 2009 at 2:26 pm
Hi guys, i too have had problems and i do prefer the pervious versions but as they say the only direction is forward and im glad of gameshadows ambition. Ive used gameshadow since v1 and thought is was awsome, coming to version 3 however there are some problems but to be honest not everything works the first time and like everyone else i got annoyed but rather than wining about it i left it for a few days to go and focus on college-work. Looking at the responses people have put i find very sad that people are far too emotional (even though i shouted the same words when it didnt work for me =P im a hypocrit) anyway let the guys get on with the fixes and i bet that once its over everyone will love the new system. Good luck Gameshadow staff im looking forward to the fixes =)
May 22nd, 2009 at 4:39 pm
Kris, thanks matey. Now, everyone that shouts a problem is a good customer, that’s my view. So Kris, contact me at tony (at) gameshadow.com and tell me specifically what is going on. The biggest issue we are still trying to nail is the -214 error and we think we know the area of the code. However all help just gets us to hone in on things. So please send me your OS what the error is and a screenshot of where it is happening.
Cheers
T
May 23rd, 2009 at 4:56 am
Tony,
As Kris mentioned, the direction you guys have taken is understandable from the developer’s point of view, and I appreciate the fact that you guys are working to polish the new version. Obviously, these things take time and in the world of personal computing, nothing starts out at 100%. Keep up the efforts.
Having said that, there are loyal customers who are paying money for a service, and that service seems to have fallen into a bog, albeit temporarily. My suggestion is this: while Version 3.0 is being worked on, why not continue to support Version 2.5? There are clearly alot of people who would rather continue to use that version, but there are also clearly enough people who are satisfied with the new face of Gameshadow, and can continue to help with the debugging process.
That’s my suggestion, anyway. To be perfectly honest, I think forcing your customers into a corner until the paint dries is not good business, and for my part, it’s enough to prevent me from renewing my subscription.
I hope that doesn’t happen, I think you guys have a really great product.
Regards,
Gabe
May 23rd, 2009 at 5:37 am
Hi Gabe, we are 4 people. A small business sometimes has to make hard decisions like this, never perfect. We DID ask everyone to get involved in the beta to help shape the product, that was 7 months ago. If subs didn’t get involved there isn’t much we can do about that.
We cannot continue with 2.5. It’s built on old technology and they cannot co-exist. Imagine trying to fully maintain two versions with 4 people?
Anyway, it’s down to choice. You have made yours and that’s absolutely fine.
The release has not been perfect but we had to just shoot in the end or we would have never released. We will be doing something for subs by adding a month or two whilst we get things right.
Lastly, I’d prefer if you contacted me personally as well, tell me what isn’t working for you and have a chinwag one to one.
Regards,
Tony

Just a quike even though you dont prefer to discuss problems (i do apologize), ive downloded the improved version and it dosent loose connection to the server and all appears well. But wen i click on the download button on the site nothing happens, i dont know if that just something on my pc but just thought it may be of some interest.
Keep up the good work because i am seeing the benefits of V3 and like it more than V2.
(ps i do IT project management at college so i have a good idea of how it works, also thats alot of work for 4 guys very impressive)
May 23rd, 2009 at 11:40 am
Tony -
I’ve noted a number of improvements. The page now loads much more quickly {I immediately removed the application from my list of start-up programs after installation, as I keep tight control on such things}. Also, the home page finally displays a link for checking game updates. However, the update mechanism just isn’t working … nor has it done so since v3 was released. Every single time I check for updates, the following message appears about 30 seconds into that process …
Run-time error
‘-2147418105 (80010007)’:
Automation error
The callee {not server application} is not available and disappeared; all connections are invalid. The call may have executed.
I’m on a Sony Vaio, running a 100% fully updated Windows Vista OS, including Service Pack 1, of course. My browser is Firefox 3.0.10 … with which I use the NoScript add-on. I allow GameShadow itself to run, along with the appropriate Google scripts that serve to analyze visitors and generate your ad-based revenue. However, I’ve also tried checking for game updates while still on my desktop {by right-clicking the system tray icon … which, incidentally, still requires 5 or 6 whole seconds to work}, and that same error message appears, thus ruling out the possibility that either Firefox or NoScript is at fault.

Acknowledged. Will do so after returning from work, this evening.
Also, I’d like to apologize for my earlier less-than-diplomatically stated messages. Girlfriend problems can make a guy cranky. Yet all is now well on that front, so I’m back to my usual cheery self!

The Remote download takes 15 minutes to kick in. We didnt what the client checking every minute or we’d have you fellas kicking up saying it was taking CPU cycles wouldnt we?
So we thought 15 minutes was about right, it’ll check then and start anything queued remotely.

Hi there,
Had a problem where the check for updates simply was not working. When launched from the tray it just sat there doing nothing. So I did what you said earlier and uninstalled, removed registry key for Gameshadow and also deleted Gameshadow folder in C:\users\Public\Public Documents. Everything seems to be working fine for me now. Hope this helps. Perhaps the installer needs to do this?

I liked the old GS. One self-contained application, nothing else involved. There was nothing wrong with it that a new skin couldn’t fix.
Now it needs a systray app and a browser based interface? Adding new steps to a UI process is poor form.
I assume you’ve done this to get stats on site traffic and boost your ad sales.
Whatever reason, I’m uninstalling it. I don’t need more systray junk when all it does is lead back to a browser which I didn’t want to use in the first place. Otherwise I would have just used Filefront etc. to begin with.

@Arkweld
There’s more to the new web version than just traffic & ads:
- Integrated game management & community features in a single UI rather than two
- You can now use your default browser rather than embedded IE6 in the old app
- System tray gives you instant notice of updates rather than you having to remember to check
- The website & system tray is necessary for remote downloads
- Most UI changes & new features can be rolled out without requiring a client-based upgrade
Plus there’s all the under-the-hood improvements.
However, if you don’t want to use it no-one’s going to force you. We spent a lot of time with beta testers on this and the overwhelming response was that people liked the changes, but I guess you can’t please everyone.
Thanks for the feedback though. You’re welcome back if you change your mind…

Wow, things really went askew with the release of v3 didn’t they.
Well not really . . . admittedly there are people here who’ve had problems but GS staff always do their best to resolve them asap. Notice that it’s a very vocal minority who find their way to the blog / forums who shout about the app not working. They must like the app though, otherwise why would they get their knickers in such a twist
Where are the rest of the 1.3million users - at home, using GS v3 how it’s meant to be used and making the most of the great new features.
I was fortunate to be involved very early on (Sept 08!) with beta testing and even luckier not to have any problems even back then. Users seem to forget that coding a solution for each and every machine variation out there is nigh on impossible.
Good job as always GS!!
PS - can’t belive I’ve been a member since 2004!!

I’ve read all the comments above and I have to say I hate V.3!
Sorry, but V.2 was simple, organized and allowed me to manage my game drive versions at a glance. I don’t care how old the technology was it worked and worked well. The new version is convoluted, confusing and agonizingly painful to use. I can’t see the new Ultra hip, Ultra cool, latest technology features because I’m to busy trying to figure out how to simply and quickly compare, download and patch games with the new V.3 version.
Where is version management console? How do you now check your installed game drive versions and compare them at a glance with a listing of patches available?
Pls get the map packs listed separately from mods and show map packs that arent installed. Show my installed versions in my games list.
Steven, I find your Spin Doctor take on the debacle transparent, inaccurate and frankly nauseating
No offense to the 1.3 million users at home cheering the Emperors new clothes as their meant to
The New Gameshadow V.3 seems more targeted at revenue generation than game management.

CCB sorry you feel that way but target those requests to me at the usual email. This is just the first phase and there is more to come. I won’t get into the delicate balance of revenue versus functionality because this isnt the right forum. But if you ran a business you would know that it is a balance you have to try and get right.
If you care to pass on your functionality views we’d love to hear them.

Tony

This was due to a database update, this happens once a day, but we’ll try and make it more obvious in the future. Should be fine, only disrupted for 2 minutes a day.

Thanks Kris, we are releasing new features very soon…hopefully some of the cynics will come round.
We’ve just put a new build up by the way which may solve some of the timeouts that people have seen.

Hi Kris, and others, We’ve just put another build up that fixes a number of the automation -214 errors. This is an important update. We plan to do a universal update in the next two weeks or so. But please feel free to upgrade from the main download page.

Hey anybody who can help me, I was reading through here to see if anybody could solve my problem, and Moggie had the same problem as I do (Run-time error ‘-214 etc.).
So i reinstalled GS with the updated version, but that didnt work, so I deleted all the registory items along with the documents/gameshadow and program files/gameshadow, re-downloaded and installed but I still have the problem, can anybody help me at all please?

Hey, just updated GameShadow, I’ve been updating all day. But now when I try to view my games my internet connection is severed, and I can’t view anything until I completly exit out of GameShadow. After completly exiting (ending all GS processes) my interenet mysteriously comes back. I first I was sure this was just a coincidence, but it’s happening very consistently now and even restarting the computer does nothing to solve the problem.
June 26th, 2009 at 12:05 am
Also wanted to quickly mention that I’m loving V3!! At first I was a little critical at how everything was web-based. But now I’m really liking it, updating is easier, faster, and much more convenient and intuitive. Thanks for everything!

@Sunflash
Thanks for the kind words. If you’re still having problems with GameShadow connecting then email us at support (at) gameshadow (dot) com and we’ll do our best to help you out!

Hi all, we’ve just put another new build up, tightens a few things up! Not compulsary but if you have any problems please upgrade to it.
July 6th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Just upgraded (only cause had to) and lots-o-problems. Hate this format, really liked the old one WAAYYY better, skips games, doesn’t support my NVIDIA driver version ???????????? Not easy to navigate, and it doesn’t seem to refresh just one game anymore (i.e. after patching a game.) Instead, you have to search all your games for updates (and look for new games) just to show one game’s updated version. Things like that, what a pain.

change management model…
Have you read my change management model blog post? Usually applying those steps towards change are useful in any situation….

Hey! I downloaded Gameshadow just today and thought this would make finding patches easier. But all the gameshadow pages say to me the same thing:
Fatal error: Uncaught exception ‘com_exception’ with message ‘Source: GameShadow.Lookup.IPCountryDescription: Error occurred in exsDatabase.Permanent.GetRecordset(usp_IP_GetCountryID) Error occurred in exsDatabase.basGeneral.PrepareCommand [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]General network error. Check your network documentation.’ in D:\www\gameshadow.com\system\classfiles\SystemGS.class.php:31 Stack trace: #0 D:\www\gameshadow.com\system\classfiles\SystemGS.class.php(31): com->IPCountry(’90.190.231.162′) #1 D:\www\gameshadow.com\system\includes\globals.php(47): SystemGS::getClientCountryID() #2 D:\www\gameshadow.com\step1-download.php(4): require(’D:\www\gameshad…’) #3 {main} thrown in D:\www\gameshadow.com\system\classfiles\SystemGS.class.php on line 31
Is that a common problem or is it temporary or I just can’t get to the page from my country?
September 20th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
I have the same problem with the website…..
What’s going on?
September 21st, 2009 at 7:59 pm
Have just downloaded the latest version from the website.
It won’t even launch.
Comes up with Error 440 Automation error.
Any ideas???
