Counter-Strike 2: Valve Considering ‘Radical’ Approach

Valve’s Doug Lombardi:

“With Counter-Strike 2, there’s a big question between, do we go start over from scratch and build a whole new game, do we do something that looks more like Team Fortress 2 that is rooted in the old game but has a ton of new stuff, or do we just sort of take everything that’s new that we’ve released and put that out in a new box.”

“I think we’re leaning more towards the two more radical places than just sort of rolling up the new box and re-skinning the box and putting out all the new stuff.”

Exciting stuff. I think it’ll take significant balls to take a radical approach – every step so far has an evolution of the original mechanics, so there’s a lot of fans to be lost. However, let’s be honest – we’ve been playing the same game for ten years now, why not consider it something completely new, and see what these guys can come up with? I’d rather what they came up with wasn’t CS Source with TF2 visuals, but there you go. That’s the price of genius I guess.

i think a new type of game would be good, with some of the features from the old one, so say new weapons, soldiers and locations, and maybe gadgets that could make it more interesting, (trip mines, remote bombs etc) and maybe a way to recover health or something, with more types of game levels

  2. You should try a new approach. Should take the time to at least try, since everyone is pretty occupied with Source and even still the old Counter-Strike. A lot of people probably thought Source was going to be a completely new aspect, but overall..it’s just the same old game with a prettier look to it and a physics engine so you can completely humiliate players when they died and mess with their lifeless body, or mess with a team mate that dropped their gun and see how long they would chase it when you shot at it. A new concept would be exciting.

  3. Nooo TF2 visuals! That’s what TF2 is for. I enjoyed CS: Source for it’s realism, that’s what I want in Counter Strike 2!

  4. Fuckin eh?! This is great news, a new Counter-Strike would be hella awesome, with gorgeous graphics and smooth gameplay :3 with tons of new weapons and equipment, and perhaps an RPG :O

but plz don’t make it look like TF2… that would suck balls!!

  5. In all honesty, I couldn’t ask for more than waht cs: source already offers. Making a new CS game? I don’t know if it’s worth it in the long run. Ever since CS: Source beta, I was like a kid in a candy store seeing my beloved CS in the source engine. I can’t see what there is to improve on to keep cs the classic counter-terrorism game it started out to be. One thing, however, is the fake sounds of gun fire. Perhaps making the guns sound more realistic would be an improvement? I don’t know, since I still love playing cs!

I’m with Rob, go for super good realistic graphics. As for a new spin, mabye have optional forms of gameplay. Capture the flag, all for all deathmatch, team deathmatch, conquest, or have something like BF where you have to capture and hold points. Have squads and different classes (always was hoping for a medic to heal me after a failed long A rush…)

mabye intruoduce customization of weapons like in CoD4…?

  7. As long as you keep CS 1.6 Alive and Kicking, I’d be happy.

I think Source sucks, TF2 I haven’t had the desire to play since it looks so corny.

If you change 1.6 to something else, I’ll probably quit playing CS all together…

  8. i think the main thing is to keep the realism in it. thats wat i, and i think more people, like about it. i’d say, new weapons and gadgets, new models and some others elements that keep the game variable.

  9. you should do like some different forms of playing for example that you can choose from single player-story mode or something and then in multiplayer a kind of halo-style like slayer, ctf, freeforall and so on. Also i agree with Matt of doing a new concept of counter-strike

  10. Make it like cs 1.5 =)
But with a new engine, new weapons, and a bit more realistic. Like the kevlars, an AK-47 or a M4A1 pierce almost any kevlar…

  11. I agree plz dont make it like TF2, If anything make it even more realistic.

  12. We can’t have TF2 graphics!!!!!, the whole fun of cs:s is the realism factor. All it needs is a new engine and then maybe sum extras like medics or even tripwires etc as said above.

  13. I would love it if they kept the Counter Strike graphics as they were but if they did make the game look like Team Fortress 2 then i would expect the game to be like “XIII” (13) that game was awesome. However i would like to see the gameplay lean more towards Call of duty a little bit faster and takes like 2-3 shots to die as it would be more “Real” or so and maybe if they set it in an Iraq type of theme like Black Hawk down.

  14. This must be Direct X10 game only.

css had good graphics bad physics…Alot of people agree even 1.6 was bad there really going to have to make everyone happy there… The graphics just need to be updated, I dont think it would take much to impress people… Pull a crysis let be able to cause damage to the environment…. HARDWARE!!! enable sli!!! I bin looking for a reson to buy a new pc(bought this one when css came out) They really got a challenge here…

  16. I think, if anything, they should take a cue from Infinity Ward and Call of Duty 4′s multiplayer and work on something more persistent. There’s only so many times you can play the same map starting the same way.

  17. Classes would be good. You know how you have the choice of which player model you are? Well I think that they should change that to like medics and infantry and such. Would be good.

  18. Please dont make like TF2….

  19. well i agree with you Rob and Sweetos, cause CS 2 with tf2 look-a-like would suck, tf2 should stay where it is and cs2 should be like previous counter strikes ut better gameplay, graphics, different and more newer weapons….. new maps…. new objectives then that would be right cool.

  20. If a new version is what they want to give to the public, then increase the detail used. Although I have TF2, I don’t like playing it much. I like realism. Counterstrike has always been about realism. Push the envelope and create a CS that has modifyable self-changing maps. The map would randomly change, opening or closing accessable areas giving a fresh challenge everytime you played the same map. Creating maps that has the ability to change gives the player a sense of discovery and utilizing the discoveries to your advantage will keep the game fresh. Enviromental destruction would be a welcome addition to CounterStrike.

The other thing that CS must change is to take out all computer assisted NPC’s out of the game completely as to make it impossible for people to create aimbots and specific cheats. Increase the amount of detail so high that even with wallhacks, it becomes clustered with too much detail to effectively use any cheats. Center the technology of online gaming to create a game that CANNOT be cracked in any way and make it impossible to create any cheats that cannot be undetected. This should be the primary force behind making a NEW CS. Defeat cheating, and the online gaming comunity will love the developers for this and online gaming for computers will take on a huge following behind the creators of a game that cannot be cracked. Cheating has practically destroyed the online gaming communtity its up to the developers to create a system that prevents cheating and brings back the entertainment of “human skills” pitched at each other in fairness.

  21. Agree with Rob, please don’t make it like TF2! I want some realism for that game, comics are fun but we want realism too!

  22. CS 2 in HL1 engine !!!!

  23. Try Asking the Nuts who Play Counterstrike 1.6 or Source what they would Like in the New Game, after all, its them that want to Play it :)

  24. Its very nice to hear that counter strike 2 is think of launching …….. its a ver nice game earlier……………. Valve can launch it and see the difference

  25. Please Please DONT do classes that would ruin it. One of the best bits of all the CS games is their classless approach. I hate how confining classes are like in SW Battle Front 2 if it was classless it would have been far better. You cannot possibly cater for all playstyles with 5 or so classes so dont leave it open ended and buyyour stuff. Stops it gettingso repetative.

But mines and trip wires would be good.

Dont know about the med packs because the current method is more realistic and you get to start again anyway. Maby make it an option to make wall dispensers work like in Half Life 2

And DONT make it look like TF2 I agree that the realism is the best bit.

But I agree more play styles would be good like a Free for all, HQ, Dominaton a bit like in COD4

    Sorry for goin on

Urm, I don’t really agree with all this “no tf2 styling! we like the realism” stuff. I have to say, as truly awesome CS:S is, it aint really realistic.

I think revamped graphics, maybe a couple more gamemode thrown in from the off (like gun-game for example), a wider selection of official (and original) maps, and maybe a couple of new guns.

As to the enirely new game from scratch, I think the engine is sound, and I just love he mod-ability, its whats kept source alive and fresh.

So in short, more features, better graphics, same core elelments!

  27. Counter-Strike’s not realistic (in fact, in gameplay mechanics, it’s probably one of the more abstract shooters out there) but it is realistically themed.

The gorgeously modelled real world weapons are a big part of the appeal, so TF2 aesthetics would somewhat ruin the atmosphere.

  28. What you’ve got to remember is that people have been playing CSS for ten years, then the question is why:quite simple really the gameplay is superb. Graphics dont matter all that much when the gameplay is so addictive. Dont change to TF2, it’s not that good, it’s just a muck about, you cant really work tactics, it’s more like RUN!!!! GET THEM!!!!.
    CSS all the way!!

  29. Ten years? Well what should change then…really? Just remodel graphics to get them up to date with some of the next gen games, add some new guns and keep some of the older ones which are nicer. They shouldnt go complicated with it – I like source for its simplistic gaming style. I fear if they go too overboard with making a ‘completely new game’ I will become disinterested in the game I’ve enjoyed for so long.

  30. They said add new stuff that appeals to the old players like tf2 did, not make it look cartoony

  31. They should try something different simply because CSS was, and still is, an out-of-date piece of tripe. Pure rubbish.

  32. They should allow a push feature so when you play zombie mod you can push things like vending machines without having to shoot them. Things like jumping on couches and vending machines and those metal tables should be improved so they don’t move as much when you walk on them. It’s just the little things that bother me. Also, improving the scoped guns would be great to make them sway a little bit and not remain idle.

  33. sall care e roman pe aici k nu inteleg nimik :( :) sall cum downloadez counter strike?????????????

  34. canter strike 1.6

  35. tf2 was cartoony, and l4d was somehwat cartoony. make this one NOT like call of duty 4 or ANY cod. they all were the exact same fail.

enable Crossfire/SLi, Enable Multi-Core support, enable DirectX 10, and the game will sell. Even if it does suck, im still gonna buy it. after all, i am a VALVe Fan boy lol.

  36. im a VALVe hater very much ;D. They upgrade 1.6 al time with some crappy patches and so, the cs community dosnt like it. and still they dont give a shit about them. Keep it CS, gameplay, all dat. New graphics and all, but same graphics. If u do it like CS Promod, just faster and all with updates (cuz they failed, theyr slow process) im sure all CS players would buy this. If u make it a whole new game, no CS player would buy it. And u can just hope who would buy it, but 10 yearys :( .

  37. JUST MAKE IT THE EXACT SAME AS CS:S BUT MAKE IT ON A WHOLE NEW ENGINE… CS:S IS GREAT BECAUSE OF ITS SIMPLICITY. DONT GO THROWING IN ALL THIS RANDOMS CRAP… KEEP AS IS. MAYBE A FEW NEW WEAPONS AND MAPS, MAYBE SOME PLAYER SKINS. AND ALL WILL BE SWEET. KEEP THE GAME AS IS!

DUDE in all seriousness same game better engine

  41. Add new shit like gamemodes like domination or cp and wepons trip mines med kits and stuff upgrade all the graphics but make sure you have a game mod called CSS CLASSIC or something so that if people don’t like new stuff or just want the old game mod they can just play it with better graphics

  42. They didn’t say it was going to look like Team Fortress 2, they said do what they did in TF2 (take the old game and update it in unique way by adding a few things)…

I think they should update the graphics as much as they can without jeapodising the frame rate.. add 2 more weapons either side, or 3 if you ditch some people hate.. (my opinion the Uzi..) they should make the physics effect the environment slightly, maybe like on Dust2, being able to tear some brick away from the Box on Short with a shotgun or Awp blast would be cool.. They should definately make some more official maps.. and add a Deathmatch mode (not like the way it is scripted on servers atm)..

that way those improvements will keep people happy yet not piss anyone off for destroying a loved game!

  43. To be honest, I don’t think Counter-Strike 2 will be a greater success than Counter-strike 1.6.
We’ve been playing it for 10 years and we won’t stop now, All other so called “Counter Strike” games so far have been failed, except Counter-Strike 1.6.
