Wiimote Rip-Off Confirmed for 360
8Bit Joystick is reporting that the joypad (codenamed Newton) rumoured to revolve around Wiimote-copying motion sensing functionality is indeed in development at Microsoft. They also helpfully point out it’s named after some guy who invented gravity, so give yourselves a pat on the back for not being as ignorant as the 8Bit audience in needing to have that pointed out to them.
Word has it Microsoft has licensed technology from the same company Nintendo did in developing for the Wii, and that the controller will be out for Christmas 2008.

Seems a strange move to me: although Nintie seems to have grabbed the market with its motion sensing gimmick, the games themsleves are still struggling to make full use of it. What’s more, Sony’s foray into the same territory’s been far from successful… perhaps it’s niche best left alone.
Let’s face it’s a bad move altogether. 3D Controller sucks. I mean come on. Having to swing the remote like a sword chop is lame and tiring. Which made Zelda not so great. Some games do make a stab at it, but at the end of the day I wish they’d have focus on gameplay and making a solid game for a regular controller than this 3D Crap. I hope it fails hard for all the systems. It’s a bad way to go. New isn’t always better. Sometimes, it is. But not this time.
All I can say is, what a bunch of assholes, and I think they’re about to get sued. Unless their INNOVATIVE NEW CONTROLLER is the M$ equivalent of the PS3 controller, they will be, because Nintendo’s patent on the Wiimote is pretttty solid.
And, @ Supreme Shogun — wow man, some shogun you are, if you find waggling the Wiimote in Twilight Princess TIRING. Seriously man you are really out-of-shape if that tired you. Given that it was in any way reasonable to do so, I could play through the entire 70 hours of Twilight Princess without stopping to cry over my hands being “tired”.
Pointer-type interface is also the most fun, efficient and immersive way to play an FPS. Fact.
Its sorta like virtual reality was. The idea for remote moving is good but the technology isn’t good enough to support it. And jumping on a band wagon is never a good idea either….
The whole idea of motion sensing controllers for games is a gimmick. The only applications that will last are the pseudo fitness / coordination development programs. It won’t be long before you can buy a Wii gym, martial arts training packages and a karma sutra training guide. The hardware will consist of motion capture suites, but in the future you won’t need to touch the hardware. Sensors will detect electron spin in every joint and translate to motion capture in real time.
you got to be kidding me….*sigh* Microsoft running out of ideas eh? Well at least there’s a probability for us to be able to use it on the PC, seeing that all their other controllers are compatible with it. But yeah, I really don’t see much use for this. Maybe we can play that HL2 wiimod on PC or something lol. Really MS, in these troubled times you shouldn’t be sinking your money into every fad that comes along.
